Bilstein Shocks & Suspension
Bilstein has been engineering monotube gas-pressure shocks in Germany since 1957. The company runs six manufacturing locations, employs over 4,000 people, and produces around 13 million shock absorbers a year, supplying OE suspensions for brands including Mercedes-AMG, Porsche, and BMW alongside its motorsport and aftermarket lines.
At Springrates we stock the full aftermarket range: Bilstein shocks, Bilstein coilovers, Bilstein shock absorbers, Bilstein adjustable shocks, Bilstein lowering springs, and complete Bilstein suspension kits. Browse the range below or read on for the difference between the B-series, the coilovers, and the 5100 truck range.
Bilstein Shock Technology
What separates Bilstein from the pack is its monotube gas-pressure design. Unlike conventional twin-tube shocks, a Bilstein monotube uses a single large-diameter chamber and an oversized piston, with high-pressure nitrogen separating the gas and oil. The architecture gives more consistent damping under repeated use, faster heat dissipation when the suspension is working hard, and better resistance to fade than a comparable twin-tube.
That's what Bilstein shock absorbers are known for in practice: precise initial response, consistent damping when the road gets rough, and long service life on the street and the track.
Bilstein B4 / B6 / B8
The B-series is the heart of Bilstein's street and OE-replacement lineup. Pick between them based on your springs and how you drive.
Bilstein B4 dampers are direct OE replacements. They match the factory valving, ride height, and fitment of your original shocks. This is the right Bilstein shock for restoring a daily driver to like-new ride quality.
Bilstein B6 performance dampers are a firmer upgrade designed to pair with stock-height factory springs. The application-specific monotube valving sharpens handling and stability for spirited daily driving, canyon roads, and heavier-loaded vehicles, all without a spring change.
Bilstein B8 performance plus dampers are built for lowered vehicles. Shortened and re-valved to work with aftermarket lowering springs, the B8 is the right shock when you're running a lowered stance and want the handling to keep up with the look.
Bilstein Coilovers
Bilstein coilovers pair the monotube damper with a threaded body for ride-height adjustment. The two main lines are the B14 (height-adjustable) and the B16 (height and damping-adjustable). The B16 in particular is the go-to for enthusiasts dialling in a setup for autocross, track days, or spirited canyon driving where the same car needs to behave differently on different surfaces.
On a back road or in a track session, Bilstein coilovers give you a tuning range without giving up the monotube's daily-drivable character.
Bilstein 5100 & Off-Road
The Bilstein 5100 series is the most popular aftermarket truck and SUV shock Bilstein makes. Ride-height adjustment is built into the front shock body via multiple snap-ring grooves, which lets you level the front end or lift it up to roughly 2.5 inches using the factory coil spring. That's a cost-effective alternative to spacers or full levelling kits.
A 46mm piston, patented digressive self-adjusting valving, and a corrosion-resistant zinc-plated body let the 5100 handle highway hauling, washboard fire roads, and rocky two-track without overheating. It's the default choice for daily-driven trucks running larger tyres and for off-road builds that need a shock to survive the use case.
Bilstein B12 Kits
Bilstein B12 suspension kits are matched packages of B8 shock absorbers and engineered lowering springs (typically Eibach). The drop is moderate, usually around 30mm front and rear depending on application, and the spring and damper rates are tuned together so the kit installs as a complete system rather than as separate parts.
Bilstein suspension kits like the B12 give you a lower stance, sharper handling response, and reduced body roll without compromising daily ride quality. Bilstein lowering kits sit at the integrated end of the upgrade path: matched components rather than mix-and-match parts.
